Low-Cost Players

Financial calculations of low-cost players are different from established companies. Their business models turn smaller gross margins into higher operating margins and hence impressive returns on assets. No wonder their capitalisations are oft en higher than industry leaders. They have also created tremendous wealth. Twelve of the top twenty five in the Forbes’s list of the world’s richest people in 2006 made their fortunes by creating (or inheriting) low-cost businesses.

A BILLION DOLLAR DEAL!

After Boeing announced its huge investment plans for India recently, it is now the turn of its arch rival, the European Airbus to launch itself into the action mode. Realising the optimism in the Indian air space, Airbus is wasting no time in cashing on it. The world’s largest aircraft manufacturer recently announced its plans to invest $1 billion in India over a period of ten years. Airbus will set up training centers (including for pilots of its A-320 model), maintenance, repair & overhaul facilities (MRO) along with engineering & design centers by the year 2007.

Shock and Disbelief

“10 people is all I use to handle the figure you quote...” Imagine the utter shock and disbelief that the B&E team experienced, when C. M. Verma nonchalantly trudged into the control room, matter-of-factly made that statement, and introduced himself quite bluntly, “I’m the Manager of the new Cold Rolling Mill!” Ten?!? Was that it? “Well, if you add sub-staff and cleaners, the total would come to 100...,” came the classic Verma riposte, with a deadpan professional glare. Hot versus Cold; 34,000 versus 10! That, dear critics, epitomizes the destruction of Tata Steel, as we had always known it. For the uninitiated, every steel slab (210 mm width and 11 metres length) from the blast furnace is sent first to the Hot Rolling Mill to be converted into a sheet (of 4 mm thickness and a massive 1.1 kilometres in length).

WITHOUT SUBSIDIES

Cotton illustrates the problem. Without subsidies, it would not pay for Americans to produce much cotton; with them, the US is the world’s largest cotton exporter. Some 25,000 rich American cotton farmers divide $3 to $4 billion in subsidies among themselves – with most of the money going to a small fraction of recipients. The increased supply depresses cotton prices, hurting some 10 million farmers in sub-Saharan Africa alone. Seldom have so few done so much damage to so many. That damage is greater when we consider how US trade subsidies contributed to the demise of the Doha Round. Rather than offering to do away with its cotton subsidies, America offered to open up its markets to cotton imports – an essentially meaningless PR move that quickly backfired.

Harley Hounds

Thus, when a formal organisation was desired to bring the Harley hounds together, instinctively it was christened the Harley Owners Group, the H.O.G! Apart from stalwarts like Elvis Presley and the ‘Undertaker’, there are millions, worldwide too, who have been members of the HOG. Regular events keep these bikers busy such as the ongoing H.O.G Spain Touring Ride and the 23 September rally in Bournemouth, UK, by the New Forest Branch of the Harley Owners’ Group. What with leather jackets, the growl of their bike engines and their attitude, the bad boy image has stuck through time with these greasers, and not unreasonably either.

Cell Technology

As a case for diversification, the VSF business, which has minimal re-investment needs, has generated strong cash flows which have resulted in funding of the cement investments. The chemical business’ performance was impacted due to water shortage. Production of caustic soda, and consequently sales volumes, declined as a result. Realisations were also affected due to lower caustic and allied product prices globally. As a result, net turnover dipped by 28% to touch Rs.715 million and PBIDT fell by 52% to Rs.179 million. As part of its future strategy, the company is in the process of converting its caustic soda plant based on mercury cell technology into the new energy-efficient membrane cell technology at a cost of Rs.1.48 billion.

That’s no-frills cinema for you, coming soon in your small town and within a price range as low as Rs.40-Rs.60! All-Encompassing

Moreover, the three banks have wide reach in different parts of the country and all the three combined would mean a reach that’s going to be all-encompassing. While, at one end Corporation Bank & Indian Bank are dominant in the southern parts of India, OBC after acquiring Global Trust Bank has a much wider reach in the northern parts of Indian peninsula. This alliance extends to building e-payment system, Bancassurance, business syndication and collaboration in terms of procurement of assets (IT and others). Even investors are rating the move positively as the shares of Corporation Bank and OBC, the listed ones, have shot up by 20% and 23% (Sept 11 to Sept 21) respectively in the bourses.

Italian Banking Sector

According to Christian Scarafia , Senior Director, Financial Institutions, Fitch Ratings, “The merger would create the largest domestic banking group in Italy with a strong nationwide franchise and a market share exceeding 20%.” The performances of Banca Intesa and Sanpaolo are strong, as the banks registered a whopping 46% and 56% (year-on year) rise in net profits respectively during the quarter ended March 2006. The present merger is likely to push M&A activity in the Italian banking sector – already rumours related to Capitalia, Monte dei Paschi di Siena, and Banca Popolare Italiana have started mounting their head.

BUSTING BUBBLE MYTHS

There is a rampant fear of a bubble being developed in realty. Residential prices across all the Tier 1 cities have nose-dived by 20-25% over the last couple of months. So is this supposedly evergreen sector now facing a downturn? Dr. Tobias Just explains, “We don’t see a countrywide speculative bubble; rapidly growing markets are prone to temporary overheating. Relatively low liquidity of real estate and high mobility of investor capital are important ingredients for developing asset bubbles.” However, at the moment, prices have gone down, so what’s the prime reason? Ankur Srivastava explains, “Home loan rates have risen by almost 150-200 bps in the past nine months, making home loans costlier. Also, as the under-construction projects near completion, speculators shall be faced with increased pressure to pay remaining instalments on the residential properties purchased by them.” Despite the recent developments, trade pundits are very upbeat about the sector, especially on the office space frontier. Prices in future in all probability are going to shoot up. This is surely not the end of real estate boom; it is just the beginning...

Fun Foods

From starting production in a meagre 300 square feet unit, the company has grown big enough to add a gigantic 50,000 square feel production plant in Uttaranchal. The beginning of the company was also fun-filled, informs the founder and Managing Director of the company, Rajiv Bahl, who initially was a Captain in the Indian Navy. The idea of Fun Foods occurred to him at a casual talk over dinner and drinks with his colleagues, when one of them pointed out a fact that no Indian company was present in the processed food segment. He elaborates, “Estimating the potential of the western processed food market – where no big players from homeland ever dared to foray – was adequate to enter this domain.”

Indeed, like he mentioned, the Catholic Cathedral, the Al Khulafa Al Rashiudin Mosque and the Nda Mariam Coptic Cathedral are the Asmarinos’ prefectures of pride and praise. Off the subject maybe, but I felt a sudden surge of gratitude for this thing called travel that is probably the simplest means to learning and more importantly, unlearning… The drive from the current capital to the former capital of Eritrea – Massawa – ought to be an itinerary agenda by itself. Such was the passage through panoramic precincts in Semhar province tiding many a twist and curve in an exhilarating getaway to the largest Eritrean port by the Red Sea. “While the Italians chose to shift capital to Asmara, this port city remained testimony to the grandeur and greed that trade tags along with it.”

IIPM Infrastructure > Campus

In terms of infrastructure, campus and technology support, IIPM is rated amongst the top institutes of the country. IIPM's academic campuses in Asia are based in New Delhi, the capital of India, Mumbai (the financial capital of India and one of the main industrial hubs of Asia), Chennai (the industrial capital of India), Bangalore (IT capital of India), Pune (academic capital of India), Hyderabad (technology city) and Ahmedabad. IIPM's Asian consulting and research centers, under IIPM's Consulting Cell (Planman Consulting) are based in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai (India), and the North American consulting and research center is based in Toronto (Canada). Chicago (USA) is the headquarters for the most resent research and consulting center that IIPM is setting up in North America. In the European continent, along with strategic partners International Management Institute (IMI) Belgium, IIPM is in the middle of the industrial capitals of Europe, namely Antwerp & Brussels. Further, the Global Opportunities & Threats Analysis (GOTA) programs of IIPM shift traditional campus learning to the live corporate arena where students visit organizations like Nestle S.A (Vevey, Switzerland), United Nations (Geneva), World Bank, ILO, Credit Suisse Europe, IMD Lausanne, etc.

IIPM's Asian campuses focus on various academic programs, namely, Full time and Integrated Programme in National Economic Planning and Entrepreneurship, Fellowship programs and on specific management training programs. In New Delhi, IIPM has the largest campus of all business schools. The IIPM Tower in Qutab Institutional Area is situated in one of the most prestigious institutional areas in South Asia. The area also has campuses of various international organizations like USAID, DFID (U.K), UN, ABB, and Ernst & Young. In Mumbai, the IIPM Tower in Bandra (West) has received many rave reviews in business magazines and news reports as being a designer's marvel and an architectural delight. As consistent with all of IIPM's international locations, the Mumbai campus is situated in one of the most highly valued locations in Asia. IIPM additionally also has another pristine campus spread across various acres of lush green landscape in South Delhi. This campus is exceptional because of the Scottish flavor of the ambience. The castle type buildings, mysteriously located between lush green landscapes and thick woods, provide the ideal setting for academic pursuits. A similarly huge and lush campus, focused now completely on rural development programs, is based in Gurgaon, adjacent to New Delhi. Interestingly, it was the Gurgaon campus where IIPM started its management programs in 1973.

All IIPM campuses have created standards in infrastructure, co-curricular, and extra curricular support. For example, students and participants, for their various projects and extra curricular activities, would regularly utilize services of air-conditioned auditoriums with seating capacities of over 1000, conference rooms with availability round the clock, computer laboratories with 24 hours online support, libraries extending across complete floors with some of the world's leading titles, classroom teaching infrastructure comparable to the most advanced in the world, sports facilities (Billiards, Swimming, Golf, Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis, Badminton, Cricket), and yes, the inimitable Canteen. World's leading organizations have provided, or currently support & maintain these high levels of infrastructure. Some of them are Microsoft, LG, Nestle, Hewlett Packard, Canon etc.

Whether for academic programs or for management training sessions across all its campuses, IIPM provides hostel accommodation for students and participants from various parts of the world. This adds phenomenally to group learning experiences, sustained by round the clock faculty interaction.

Upward Swing in Gold Prices

The weakening of rupee and non-availability of pepper outside the exchange resulted in the prices of this sibling of salt zooming up to Rs.7,150 from Rs.6,850 per unit (per 10 tonne) on June 26. Delhi Trade Forum’s Rathod further blames futures trading for the upward swing in gold prices from Rs.6,200 six months ago to Rs.11,500 per 10 grams last month, and silver from Rs.12,200 per kg to Rs.19,800. There are also allegations of some tainted stock market players like Ketan Parekh manipulating the commodity market to book heavy profits. The NCDEX Managing Director P. H. Ravi Kumar denies this. In any case the exchange itself imposes margins to ward off speculators. Recently, NCDEX imposed a margin of 45% on urad dal and 18.5% on tur dal to discourage speculators. Trading on mentha oil had to be suspended for sometime on July 9, “In view of very high volatility,” said another NCDEX official. But, other exchanges don’t put up such stringent safeguards. The basic issue now is how to strengthen the commodity regulator and speed up the physical delivery system.

IIPM-News:- Safari was priced on a higher side

Further, due to Safari’s premium pricing strategy, sales have been low. The cutback is an attempt to revitalize the brand, which is likely to result in amplifi ed volumes and a higher market share. Kalpesh Parekh, an auto analyst with ASK Raymond James says, “Safari was priced on a higher side, now it has come in sync with market dynamics.” With Tata changing gears, competition in B1 segment is most likely to take an ugly face, as Tata Motors has lagged behind M&M and Toyota. Janish Shah, an auto analyst at Networth Stocks Comments, “I don’t think there will be any price cuts from M&M, GM, Toyota and others. But we can expect aggressive marketing to protect market shares.” Toyota played a similar gimmick last year by off ering a discount of Rs.80,000 & eventually launching a new version of Corolla. While Tata might mull that option, the best strategy would be to aggressively change customer perceptions of its brand. In the J. D. Power Index of 2005, Tata’s ratings degraded by 28 points over 2004 on the customer satisfaction scale. It’s crucial for Tata to lift its customer ratings, as if the brand loses appeal, price will fail to create the desired impact.

    A Profligate Foray into Japan

    IIPM ! Business & Economy ! IIPM Publication ! ! !

A profligate foray into Japan, acquiring Turkey’s Telsim, and the impaired losses, have dented the balance sheet. Though Sarin is not to be blamed for all the mess, he has not yet been able to exorcise the costly write-offs of the ill-fated $183 billion Mannesmann deal, which is still haunting the company. He has expertly been walking the tightrope for quite some time now. The steadfastness in his belief and attitude can be ascribed to his military background, as his father was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian military. Though an Indian by birth, Sarin holds US citizenship now. He had aspired to be a pilot at one time in life, but was persuaded by his mother to shift focus to academic pursuits. He graduatedfrom IIT in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree; and then he completed a Master’s in engineering and an MBA (with a Finance specialisation) from University of California, Berkley, in 1978. It was at Berkley that he met his future wife Rummi. Initially, he worked as a consultant in the energy sector; but finally found his love in the telecommunication sector in the year 1984.

Much to the astonishment of all and sundry (not including the ones on their timetravel- visits!), he dictated proceedings in the early stages, donning the cherished Maillot Jaune (Yellow Jersey) after winning a stage in the Alps set over six climbs! The stunned silence that enveloped onlookers had as much to do with the fact that he had only just finished rehabilitation as the fact that he was not considered an accomplished climber in mountain stages (I laughed at the thought that Lance had finished only one of his previous four trips!) He went on to become the first American since Greg Le Mond to win...

    Moscow Massacre: ‘98

It’s another example of the vehemence of the South Asian financial crisis. Russia, heavily dependent on its oil exports, suddenly felt the jolts as the South Asian economies came crashing down. The sudden cooling of commodity prices was a major set back to trade revenues of the government. Furthermore, in order to keep inflation in control and to stabilize the exchange rates during the pre-crisis years, Russia sold its foreign exchange reserves. This left the Russian government, dependent on borrowings, with little leeway to maneuver; and it finally succumbed to the pressures of capital flight, with the Russian government defaulting on all its debt obligations.

I mention the importance of these military-to-military relationships because the US in this new century is undergoing a significant transformation of its military arrangements and partnerships around the globe and the necessary adjustments based on the new realities and new threats that have emerged since the end of the Cold War. It is important to note that since 2001, the US has probably done more things, with more nations, in more constructive ways, and in more parts of the world, than at any other time in its history. In the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, President George W. Bush helped fashion and lead the largest coalition in history of 80-plus nations to fight the global war on terror. Furthermore, roughly 60 nations are currently cooperating in the Proliferation Security Initiative to prevent dangerous weapons and materials from being transported to terrorists or outlaw regimes.

He has overseen the launch of the Punto Grandè, presently the hottest selling car in Western Europe. The focus is now on economic models especially diesel cars; which are a rage in Europe. ITC HOTELS & ANSAL HOTELS

    IIPM-PRESS
For information, ITC Hotels Limited and Ansal Hotels Limited merged with the company in 2004. Finally, paperboards, specialty paper and packaging are cash cows for ITC and should be encouraged beyond current levels as they are the second highest contributors to ITC’s bottom line, with profits of Rs.1.81 billion in H1, 2005 (a growth of 20.9% over the previous year), and revenues of Rs.9.3 billion (a growth of 22% over the previous year).
