FDI in the real estate

In fact, they were the first firm to be allowed to bring in FDI in the real estate – since 2000, the Group has brought in as much as $500 million of FDI equity. But, is the ‘scalability’ model actually sustainable in a country like India with so many millions below the poverty line? “India is a rapidly growing economy and provides a unique opportunity to create world-class financial services. The confidence of Mr. Mittal and Farallon Capital in Indiabulls is a testament to the huge opportunity in front of the company,” Sameer Gehlaut, CEO, Indiabulls Group, didn’t lose a step nonchalantly communicating the same to us, with the necessary sycophantic embellishments.

Customer Relationship managers

If you can make an investor part with anywhere between Rs.25 to Rs.250 to register as an online trader, it simply increases the number of your sales people exponentially, and voila! You have a billion dollar firm! “640 branches; 4,000 relationship managers; 450,000 customers; $2.3 billion market capitalisation,” the official statement is loudly pasted on our faces as a response to our blatantly sarcastic queries! But really, from a mere start as a private Internet stock broking firm, Indiabulls has grown to now become not only a diversified publicly held financial service provider (from securities, to consumer finance and mortgages), but also one of India’s leading real-estate behemoths!

Internal Security Becomes much more

And while an inclusive growth strategy for the subcontinent is of prime essence, in the short run, India is left with not much option but to increase its vigil, the reminiscences of 1948, 1965,1971 and 1999 still fresh in mind. It is more of a certainty that Pakistan’s misanthropic misadventure would increasingly spread its fangs much beyond the paradigm of Kashmir to all over India. And it is a bigger certainty that in the new game, Bangladesh would be the new pawn, making sure that for India, internal security becomes much more of a concern than external threats.

Being treated at source

Be it any kind of waste, it is being treated at source so that it’s easier to use further or to dispose it off . Blowing natural air that passes through air filters is used for the building, again saving on electricity by not using air-conditioners. From rainwater harvesting to treatment of water that can be further used; from using regional or recycled material to providing insulation in roof and walls, the focus was on being resource efficient on every stage. Though the cost of building goes up (but as a percentage of actual cost of the normal building it hardly touches double digits) the savings are humongous and to prove that Wipro have established the fact. According to an audit conducted by Tata Energy Resources Institute of Wipro’s building, there was a 46% saving in the electricity bill. Besides, Wipro expects to recover the extra cost incurred in 3-4 years.

Fight against the pollution is going on

The industrial units have to buy water from outside far away places at a higher price. Some have gone to the extent of buying farmlands with wells to draw water and there sure are protests against it. The fight against the pollution is going on. The court has ordered closure of textile and dyeing units until they set up treatment plant with reverse osmosis process. Now those units are setting up treatment units. As per government’s order, they have to complete it before July 2007. M.Balamurugan, Founder of an NGO named Kurinji Foundation states to B&E, “The dyeing units will construct the treatment plants and there’s no doubt about it.

De-lighting naturally

Waste disposal assumes an increasingly important aspect in the battle to save the environment...
Earth Day This year was special . 1,000,000 Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFL) were given away in the USA in a special Earth day promotion, in an effort to cut down on energy consumption and securing a saving of nearly 12 million dollars per year in electricity bills. In India too, West Delhi is reported to have at least 3,00 000 users of this energy saving long life lamp. There is a nationwide campaign promoting and encouraging the cost-effective and eco-friendly solution. Tragically, once again, we are leaping off and reaching for a solution offered by technology but without understanding its full implication and potential repercussions.

Insulate their homes

According to Brown, if the public were to insulate their homes better and carry out environmental changes in their immediate surroundings, they would be in a position to save £5 a week and in turn help UK to doing something concrete about the renewable energy sources. We only hope Mr. Brown, you will continue to stick to green and not be a chameleon, once ensconced in the PM’s chair. Putting the ‘green’ issue at the heart of his battle to win vote banks, Gordon has pledged to build ‘eco-towns’ solving both ecological concerns as well as demands for affordable housing. “Unlike President Bush, Gordon Brown is erudite and intelligent enough to understand the nuances of climate change and its impact on sustainable development.

Election commission

You might think that this is just another way for Dell to take your money, but the company’s putting your money to good use. The fee is a token one, to be sure, but it could change the way people think about consumer electronics. I see it the same way I see that check box on my tax return, the one that sends $3 from my yearly tax bill to the Federal Election Commission. I’m guessing that IRS check box is representative of the first time that the average voter actually realises that election campaigns are partially financed by the federal government. Likewise, the check box on Dell’s site may be the first time that the average PC buyer thinks about the environmental impact of all that web surfing.

Greenpeace has made some of the iipmworld’s best see red. Companies like HP, Sony, Nokia, Samsung, LG & Ericsson have successfully come into Greenpeace good books, but companies like Apple, Dell, IBM, Lenovo, Siemens & Toshiba have got themselves caught on the wrong side. HCL is now a new entrant to this list of defamed companies. Bad publicity of course is the most apparent fall out. Moreover, if all companies slowly start falling in line, there could be pressure on Indian government to ensure compliance for Indian manufacturers. Certainly HCL has to take a proactive approach to clean up its act.

Indian consumer

However, the ultimate verdict, of course, lies with the Indian consumer and this is where the company has digressed from the IBM way. Nearly two years ago, people did not even know Lenovo. The first objective was to build brand awareness & sponsorship of KBC 2 played a huge role. Today, brand awareness of Lenovo is 85% in corporates & 74% in consumer space, as quoted by Rahul. Unlike IBM, Lenovo is competing head on in the HP dominated home PC segment. The company has therefore ramped up the distribution model significantly. There is more focus on B & C class towns as opposed to IBM’s focus on metros. The company has more than doubled its Lenovo exclusive stores to 100 currently.

Making of a Star

They’re in a mess, even Mr. Khan’s charm didn’t help. Will this Star sink or shoot up once again, far, far from Mr. Chandra’s reach? In crowded and congested Andheri in Mumbai, you can spot a once cocky flock of youngsters looking a tad worried as they leave office for the day. Even the security guard sports a frown and the entrance looks a bit frayed. Insiders in the swanky headquarters of the Star Network talk in hushed whispers about a two year old ghost coming back to haunt them.

Two years ago, the buccaneer baron Rupert Murdoch and his son and heir apparent Lachlan Keith Murdoch squared off in a hostile confrontation. The son was forced to blink and retire hurt to Australia. Grapevine has it, Lachlan is very keen on investing in the country and might pump in close to Rs.10 billion. One of the places where his dollars will flow is INX Media which plans to fl oat 10-12 channels (taking Star and other existing players head-on) and is officially owned by Star India’s former CEO Peter Mukerjea’s wife. If the deal comes through, the arguments over dinner table, between the Murdochs will transform into a full fl edged battle fought on Indian
tele-tube. For Star India, which has been in a mess for some time now, it will make things, only worse!

Living on sulphur

Removing construction debris to disposal of electronic waste are issues that most of us would not find perilous enough. Ironically today, the financial capital of India – Mumbai, is mightily plagued with the same! Still think they’re trivial issues?! Raheja’s greatest commercial complex, Mindspace, that houses the best of companies in Malad, is a ticking time-bomb. Living & breathing the air that has over 100 companies, multiple housing societies and swanky malls can lead to cancer. “The commercial complex is sitting on a garbage dumping yard, and the height of the garbage is 20 to 30 feet.

For Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) expanding and growing might be the key words. But for someone like Naina Lal Kidwai, Chief Executive, India HSBC, it’s the ‘outstanding’ and not just the ‘good’ that’s the goal! And under such a protagonist, HSBC is the 5th best bank in our rankings. HSBC’s emerging market footprint and its expertise in transaction banking makes it well-placed to provide small-scale financial services – credit, savings, insurance and remittance products – largely in the developing world.

Virtual Drugs

For example, in Second Life, Reuters has built a separate bureau, while conglomerates like IBM, Adidas, Toyota, Sears and even the Swedish Embassy have bought over property, set up offices and initiated corporate meetings. Amusingly, even vices like sex and drugs have travelled to such worlds, as Brian Shuster, chief amusingly explains, “Users of virtual drugs have reported the effects of these virtual drugs to be surprisingly realistic and lifelike.” Oh really, please! So where really are we headed? “The future of the internet is a grand battle between freedom and control. Neither outcome is predestined,” explains Seth Finkelstein, an acclaimed consulting programmer, to B&E. Danny Ayers, Semantic Web Developer and consultant, forecasts to B&E, “The indications now seem to be that the web is evolving towards a generalised web of data rather than being document-oriented.” Will the net one day host technologies that are able to mirror even an iota of the artificial intelligence of Kubris’ HAL? Forget AI, just ask Google – “A cheap vacation outside India for my family, where my budget is not more than Rs.200,000 including hotel accommodation, food and travel” – and you will get zilch!

Linterland now carries a colossal clientele list, having players such as HLL, Dabur, UNICEF, AT&T, Hero Honda, ICICI Bank, Godrej, BBC Radio and Tata Steel to name a few. Debashis politely, but flatly, refuses to be called the second agency of Lintas, and corrects with a definite resoluteness, “At any point of time, their (Lintas’) knowledge of brand building is much better than mine. However, what I can do, Lowe can’t do! When we both come together, we are a great combination...” Quiz Debashis Das about some memorable campaigns, he quickly recollects the work done on Kirloskar Oil Engines Ltd., “It was a rural brand, but it had not invested in communication for almost 8-10 years.”

US-Based Airline

A new US-based airline that is being launched by an NRI called Rahul Puranik promises to give you great, low-cost deals between India and the US. If everything goes according to plan, Puranik’s low-cost airline, to be called Sapphire Airways, will connect San Francisco, New York and Chicago to Delhi and Mumbai by early next year! Although the pricing strategy is yet to be worked out (although it is sure that the pricing will be discounted), what is on the cards is that Sapphire plans to operate 12 planes on the India-US route.

And it all showed in the country’s growth, as IMF figures point out that the GDP experienced an average increase of 5.9% a year, compared to the region’s average of 2.8% during 1973-99 period. For the year 2006, the country’s real GDP grew by 4.6% as compared to 2.5% a year ago (The World Bank). Consequently, the companies which did their R&D work in India finally decided to start manufacturing in the country. Work Against Wal-Mart

These are the simple and obvious reasons that could work against Wal-Mart. But the real reasons go deeper than that. Perhaps the most formidable mountain that Wal-Mart needs to climb and surmount is in the form of a man called Mukesh Ambani. Beginning October 2006, Mukesh has kick-started the most ambitious venture in Indian corporate history. Both Wal-Mart and Reliance Retail will be in a race to grab prime locations near urban centres in India. Mukesh has the decisive edge here because Reliance Retail has already locked in real estate for the super stores and hyper markets across the country. Analysts would argue that the really deep pockets of Wal-Mart would enable it to negate this advantage enjoyed by Mukesh. But they would be missing one vital point here: and that is the tremendous lobbying clout that Mukesh enjoys in the country’s ruling establishment.

NGO's

Suddenly, animal rights activists and NGOs (who spend more time and money jet setting across continents to attend seminars than protecting animals) are beating their chests and moaning that the Bill will systematically kill whatever few tigers and lions that are left in the Indian forests. So powerful has been this orchestrated propaganda against the Tribal Bill that even otherwise sober media analysts and columnists have become hysterically opposed to the Bill. Any thinking Indian should be ashamed of these shenanigans and the derogatory manner in which these people are treating tribals. Their brazen contention is that tribals will not be able to manage cultivation of the land allotted to them and will destroy forests and animals. How ridiculous!
