A Profligate Foray into Japan

IIPM ! Business & Economy ! IIPM Publication ! ! !

A profligate foray into Japan, acquiring Turkey’s Telsim, and the impaired losses, have dented the balance sheet. Though Sarin is not to be blamed for all the mess, he has not yet been able to exorcise the costly write-offs of the ill-fated $183 billion Mannesmann deal, which is still haunting the company. He has expertly been walking the tightrope for quite some time now. The steadfastness in his belief and attitude can be ascribed to his military background, as his father was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian military. Though an Indian by birth, Sarin holds US citizenship now. He had aspired to be a pilot at one time in life, but was persuaded by his mother to shift focus to academic pursuits. He graduatedfrom IIT in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree; and then he completed a Master’s in engineering and an MBA (with a Finance specialisation) from University of California, Berkley, in 1978. It was at Berkley that he met his future wife Rummi. Initially, he worked as a consultant in the energy sector; but finally found his love in the telecommunication sector in the year 1984.

Lance had finished only one of his previous trips!

Much to the astonishment of all and sundry (not including the ones on their timetravel- visits!), he dictated proceedings in the early stages, donning the cherished Maillot Jaune (Yellow Jersey) after winning a stage in the Alps set over six climbs! The stunned silence that enveloped onlookers had as much to do with the fact that he had only just finished rehabilitation as the fact that he was not considered an accomplished climber in mountain stages (I laughed at the thought that Lance had finished only one of his previous four trips!) He went on to become the first American since Greg Le Mond to win...

Great Symbol of Youthful Male Beauty

Michelangelo’s David, the greatest symbol of youthful male beauty, carved on the principles of disegno, the finest form of art, which mimics divine creation and assumes that the supreme form already exists within the marble, much like the peerless form of supermodel Marcus Schenkenberg divine proportions, if ever there were any. Just ask the ladies!

    Moscow Massacre: ‘98

It’s another example of the vehemence of the South Asian financial crisis. Russia, heavily dependent on its oil exports, suddenly felt the jolts as the South Asian economies came crashing down. The sudden cooling of commodity prices was a major set back to trade revenues of the government. Furthermore, in order to keep inflation in control and to stabilize the exchange rates during the pre-crisis years, Russia sold its foreign exchange reserves. This left the Russian government, dependent on borrowings, with little leeway to maneuver; and it finally succumbed to the pressures of capital flight, with the Russian government defaulting on all its debt obligations.

I mention the importance of these military-to-military relationships because the US in this new century is undergoing a significant transformation of its military arrangements and partnerships around the globe and the necessary adjustments based on the new realities and new threats that have emerged since the end of the Cold War. It is important to note that since 2001, the US has probably done more things, with more nations, in more constructive ways, and in more parts of the world, than at any other time in its history. In the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, President George W. Bush helped fashion and lead the largest coalition in history of 80-plus nations to fight the global war on terror. Furthermore, roughly 60 nations are currently cooperating in the Proliferation Security Initiative to prevent dangerous weapons and materials from being transported to terrorists or outlaw regimes.
