Beautiful bond shared between man and man’s best friend...

Considering the fact that criminal law cannot be retrospective and even if it is amended, it would be for the future, it is difficult to ascertain the result of this case in particular. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) along with others who feel very strongly about such beastly act are creating a hue and cry so that such actions do not see a repeat. In this first-of-its-kind case being tried in Indian courts, it’s perhaps vital to do that, as a conviction in this case would serve as a catalyst in decision making for all such future cases, if any, and act as a deterrent.

Cases of bestiality have been reported across the globe. On the Internet, it has been explicitly mentioned in various blogs that farmers and shepherds in foreign lands such as New Zealand and Australia, assault their sheep on a regular basis. One blogger also claims that such cases are as common as changing partners, so why all the fuss? Besides, not very long ago, in Delhi, a similar case came to light where a man had apparently sexually assaulted a buffalo. Ranging from brutal dog fights to dog rapes now, man has explored it all... Medical testing and dog fighting have always faced criticism but little did animal rights activists anticipate that dog rape would soon figure in the list too.

As of today, there’s no space for a debate about bestiality. “Anyone capable of this kind of cruelty poses a definitive risk, not just to animals, but to fellow human beings,” says PETA’s Jayasimha. There’s no denying that such an act of perversion can only be labeled as unpardonable and fills one’s heart with pity towards the animal which only looks to you in anticipation of some pure love and affection. While even alternate sexuality is a hot potato in the Indian context, Sir Elton John, the champion for the LGBT movement, had once famously remarked, “I think people should be free to engage in any sexual practices they choose; they should draw the line at animals though”.
