Retirement at 60(0)?

There are people who have great talent. They are great belly dancers, great singers, great scientists. You know they are people for whom you feel 'what a shame, they are getting older...' It will be a gift to society that great performers, great musicians, great artists, great scientists are able to live longer because they will be able to provide more of their great talent to the society.

The problem would be that someone is 150-years-old, and still very young and active, there would be no excuse for retiring them from their job. So it is going to be extremely difficult for younger people to advance. Because the older people wouldn’t be getting old. So, it would create huge problems in that respect in the society. We will have to reorganise it.

Beautiful bond shared between man and man’s best friend...

Considering the fact that criminal law cannot be retrospective and even if it is amended, it would be for the future, it is difficult to ascertain the result of this case in particular. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) along with others who feel very strongly about such beastly act are creating a hue and cry so that such actions do not see a repeat. In this first-of-its-kind case being tried in Indian courts, it’s perhaps vital to do that, as a conviction in this case would serve as a catalyst in decision making for all such future cases, if any, and act as a deterrent.

Cases of bestiality have been reported across the globe. On the Internet, it has been explicitly mentioned in various blogs that farmers and shepherds in foreign lands such as New Zealand and Australia, assault their sheep on a regular basis. One blogger also claims that such cases are as common as changing partners, so why all the fuss? Besides, not very long ago, in Delhi, a similar case came to light where a man had apparently sexually assaulted a buffalo. Ranging from brutal dog fights to dog rapes now, man has explored it all... Medical testing and dog fighting have always faced criticism but little did animal rights activists anticipate that dog rape would soon figure in the list too.

As of today, there’s no space for a debate about bestiality. “Anyone capable of this kind of cruelty poses a definitive risk, not just to animals, but to fellow human beings,” says PETA’s Jayasimha. There’s no denying that such an act of perversion can only be labeled as unpardonable and fills one’s heart with pity towards the animal which only looks to you in anticipation of some pure love and affection. While even alternate sexuality is a hot potato in the Indian context, Sir Elton John, the champion for the LGBT movement, had once famously remarked, “I think people should be free to engage in any sexual practices they choose; they should draw the line at animals though”.

It’s all about having a purposeful fizz!

PepsiCo’s top honchos are now paying special heed to environmental initiatives. Angshuman Paul finds out more...

PepsiCo’s latest corporate report also talks about environmental sustainability. Can you elaborate on it?

SAL: Our group policy has always been to maintain the eco-system of the locality where we are operating. But now we would be doing that with a clear cut mission under ‘environmental sustainability’ and specifically for the South Asia, Middle East and Africa (SAMEA) region.

So, what exactly are you planning for this region?
SAL: We would be planting more trees, especially citrus-based fruit trees. We also plan to preserve natural water resources and achieve positive water balance by 2009. In India we will save and recharge more water than what we will use in our plants. MK: Millions of people in this region are suffering from major deficiencies of key nutrients like iron, Vitamin A, et al, which is leading to serious health problems. Thus we plan to launch healthy products to address such issues.

How are these green initiatives helping Pepsi?
SAL: This is not a part of our branding and promotional campaign. We believe we are responsible for the resources that we use in our production process and as such we can’t deploy them. In fact, our multi-pronged approach to reduce water usage across production plants includes innovative reuse and recycling of water. We are also tying up with farmers to save water.

How much are you planning to invest for environmental sustainability?
SAL: PepsiCo Foundation’s commitments to safe water initiatives will reach nearly $15 million in the next three years. The funds will be utilised to address critical water scarcity issues. We will also take up some agri-partnerships projects with farmers. MK: We would also be reaching young women to make them aware of health issues. Our vision is to sell products which are healthy and in the process we will also ensure that we are not deploying any natural resource during the manufacturing process.
