These are the simple and obvious reasons that could work against Wal-Mart. But the real reasons go deeper than that. Perhaps the most formidable mountain that Wal-Mart needs to climb and surmount is in the form of a man called Mukesh Ambani. Beginning October 2006, Mukesh has kick-started the most ambitious venture in Indian corporate history. Both Wal-Mart and Reliance Retail will be in a race to grab prime locations near urban centres in India. Mukesh has the decisive edge here because Reliance Retail has already locked in real estate for the super stores and hyper markets across the country. Analysts would argue that the really deep pockets of Wal-Mart would enable it to negate this advantage enjoyed by Mukesh. But they would be missing one vital point here: and that is the tremendous lobbying clout that Mukesh enjoys in the country’s ruling establishment.
