Making of a Star

They’re in a mess, even Mr. Khan’s charm didn’t help. Will this Star sink or shoot up once again, far, far from Mr. Chandra’s reach? In crowded and congested Andheri in Mumbai, you can spot a once cocky flock of youngsters looking a tad worried as they leave office for the day. Even the security guard sports a frown and the entrance looks a bit frayed. Insiders in the swanky headquarters of the Star Network talk in hushed whispers about a two year old ghost coming back to haunt them.

Two years ago, the buccaneer baron Rupert Murdoch and his son and heir apparent Lachlan Keith Murdoch squared off in a hostile confrontation. The son was forced to blink and retire hurt to Australia. Grapevine has it, Lachlan is very keen on investing in the country and might pump in close to Rs.10 billion. One of the places where his dollars will flow is INX Media which plans to fl oat 10-12 channels (taking Star and other existing players head-on) and is officially owned by Star India’s former CEO Peter Mukerjea’s wife. If the deal comes through, the arguments over dinner table, between the Murdochs will transform into a full fl edged battle fought on Indian
tele-tube. For Star India, which has been in a mess for some time now, it will make things, only worse!
