Consequently, the companies which did their R&D work in India finally decided to start manufacturing in the country. Today, apart from Nokia, Alcatel & Ericsson, the Korean telecom giants Samsung & LG have zeroed in on India as a telecom manufacturing hub not only for the Indian market but also for the whole Asia Pacific region. “India, because of its strategic locations, favourable government policies, high skilled manpower & unabated leadership in soft ware has of late become the favourable hub for mobile manufacturing & exports,” states a spokesperson from Samsung India.

Work Against Wal-Mart

These are the simple and obvious reasons that could work against Wal-Mart. But the real reasons go deeper than that. Perhaps the most formidable mountain that Wal-Mart needs to climb and surmount is in the form of a man called Mukesh Ambani. Beginning October 2006, Mukesh has kick-started the most ambitious venture in Indian corporate history. Both Wal-Mart and Reliance Retail will be in a race to grab prime locations near urban centres in India. Mukesh has the decisive edge here because Reliance Retail has already locked in real estate for the super stores and hyper markets across the country. Analysts would argue that the really deep pockets of Wal-Mart would enable it to negate this advantage enjoyed by Mukesh. But they would be missing one vital point here: and that is the tremendous lobbying clout that Mukesh enjoys in the country’s ruling establishment.

NGO's

Suddenly, animal rights activists and NGOs (who spend more time and money jet setting across continents to attend seminars than protecting animals) are beating their chests and moaning that the Bill will systematically kill whatever few tigers and lions that are left in the Indian forests. So powerful has been this orchestrated propaganda against the Tribal Bill that even otherwise sober media analysts and columnists have become hysterically opposed to the Bill. Any thinking Indian should be ashamed of these shenanigans and the derogatory manner in which these people are treating tribals. Their brazen contention is that tribals will not be able to manage cultivation of the land allotted to them and will destroy forests and animals. How ridiculous!

Low-Cost Players

Financial calculations of low-cost players are different from established companies. Their business models turn smaller gross margins into higher operating margins and hence impressive returns on assets. No wonder their capitalisations are oft en higher than industry leaders. They have also created tremendous wealth. Twelve of the top twenty five in the Forbes’s list of the world’s richest people in 2006 made their fortunes by creating (or inheriting) low-cost businesses.
